This fall after the 2013 Frankfurt Auto Show, the BMW 2 Series Coupe will make its world debut. The F23 2 Series Convertible with a soft top will follow shortly after.
A reader of our sister-magazine Bimmertoday spotted a test mule near the Leipzig plant where the last units of the BMW 1 Series Coupe are currently built before production of 2 Series Coupe commences.
The spy shots below give us a look at the 2 Series lightning which includes the popular full LED headlights and taillights. The F22 2 Series Coupe feature redesigned headlights (when compared to the 1 Series Hatchback) with a sleeker and sportier look. The rear lights are also quite different than the 1 Series variants.
Inside the design mimics the one of the 1 Series Hatchback, including the driving oriented cockpit and the free-standing LCD screen in the center of the dashboard. The color options and trims will also follow the ones see on the hatch, but we expect to see some variations on certain models.
The 2 Series Coupe and Convertible are closely related to the current generation F20/F21 1 Series, which implies the use of a rear-wheel drive architecture and in some cases, an all-wheel drive system.
Under the hood we expect to see 220d, 218i or 225i models. At the top of the line-up, the M Performance Automobiles sub-division will take over with two high-performance 2 Series models: M235i and M235i xDrive.
The M235i will most likely use the same engine as the M135i, a 3.0 liter TwinPower turbocharged six-cylinder producing 320 horsepower and 450 Nm of torque (332 lb-ft) at 1,300 rpm. Redline is set at 7000 rpm.
BMW will officially sell the 2 Series Coupe to customers in Spring of 2014.
