MINI Rocketman concept made its world debut at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. The study car brought back the exterior dimensions of the classic MINI, but with an infusion of new ideas and design language.
Initially introduced in a concept form, the Rocketman will be heading for production in 2014. According to a report by AutoExpress UK, the new mini-MINI (no naming convention has been decided) will create a new entry point for the company, with a range of three-cylinder engines on offer, lightweight materials throughout and an all-electric version in the pipeline.
The unique 3+1 seater features three doors and has length just over 3 meters, cater to the urban lifestyle in big cities. MINI Rocketman makes use of lightweight design principles and an interior geared to maximum driving fun and unbeatable variability. A carbon spaceframe construction, whose striking surface structure is visible at the front end of the car, around its doors and in the interior, forms the basis for a weight-minimizing construction.
While there will be seats for four, the chair behind the driver will only be suitable for short trips. However, the instrument cluster moves backwards and forwards with the steering wheel to boost room when necessary.
The MINI Rocketman Concept measures 3.419 meters (approx. 11 ft. 3 in.) in length, adding just a few extra centimeters to the front and rear of the brand’s founding father born in 1959. The new study is 1.907 meters (approx. 6 ft. 3 in.) wide, including the exterior mirrors, and stands 1.398 meters (approx. 4 ft. 7 in) tall.
Same magazine says that when going into production, the new MINI will feature a dual-function boot, which features a conventional compartment accessed via a hatch with a drawer-like storage area underneath. The centrally mounted exhaust is also slated for production.
Speaking to Auto Express, BMW sales and marketing director Ian Robertson said: “MINI will never produce a car under the ‘i’ brand – this is exclusively for BMWs – but the technology we are developing for the ‘i’ family of cars will certainly be made available for the rest of the BMW Group.” After the successful MINI E field trials, BMW Group has one more reason to build a production-ready electric MINI.
